The Commander of The Lord’s Hosts

Joshua 5:13-15 (NKJV)

"And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?”

So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”

And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”

Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so."

For the past year or so, The Holy Spirit has really been teaching me and motivating me to learn Old Testament prophecies, especially Messianic prophecies, so that I know the scriptures of truth for myself and to be able to explain and teach others when the appropriate time comes.

2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) states “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

These scripture in Joshua chapter 5 can only be in reference to the Son of God, which we all know is Jesus Christ. The awesome thing is that Joshua in Hebrew is “Yehoshua” which means “the Lord is salvation” and Yeshua, which is the Hebrew name for Jesus, is an alternate form of the name Yehoshua, but both name variations have the same meaning.

Additionally, I was researching the meaning of the sword in the Old Testament and from what I gathered is that the sword of God denotes executing judgment, usually judgment against a nation (Ezekiel 12 for reference). It’s important that we seek to learn these things and supplicate to God to reveal these things to us by His Spirit, because in the times we live in many people claim to believe in God, but many lack knowledge and assurance that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior.

It is not our job to save people, The Holy Spirit does that by drawing people to Jesus Christ, but it is our job to love God and to love all people, be light and witnesses of the truth, help people turn from sins and iniquity and of course sharing the gospel. We are called to help win souls.

Proverbs 11:30 (KJV) - “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he that winneth souls is wise.”

James 5:19-20 (KJV) - “Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.”
